Day – “Land of 1000 Chances”

LISTEN:  Day – Boots In The Pool  (from YouTube)

Every few years an artist seemingly comes out of nowhere – without the months of leaked tracks and mega-hype – and drops a masterpiece of an album on an unsuspecting listening public.  That is exactly what the artist now known as Day (formerly DJ Day) has done with “Land of 1000 Chances”, an album that is not at all easily classified other than that it deserves mention with the best records of the year so far.

“Land of 1000 Chances” is definitely an album of instrumental hip-hop, but it is also so much more.  The beats are there (and perfectly crafted), as are the usual samples, sweeping strings and keyboards, yet there are also great vocals and guitars and flourishes of jazz, disco and world music.  Even Mama Shelter which we previewed last month, sounds so much more impressive when heard in the context of the album.  The bottom line is that this is about as ambitious an album as we’ve heard in the instrumental hip-hop arena in quite some time.  It works on every level and truly leaves you wanting more.  Listen to the great Boots In The Pool above and grab a copy of the album here.  Highly recommended.
