Today sees the release of Volume 2 of the Miles Davis Bootleg Series, this one being “Live in Europe 1969″. Like the first volume (“Live In Europe 1967“) these are remastered live recordings that have been floating around for years as unofficial bootlegs. What makes this new one so exciting for fans is that it features Miles’ so called “Third Great Quartet” featuring Wayne Shorter on saxophone, Chick Corea on keys, Dave Holland on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums. Members of this group were part of the recording sessions for such classic albums as “In A Silent Way”, “Bitches Brew” (check out Shorter’s Feio from that album above)and “A Tribute To Jack Johnson” but they never recorded an official album together as a quintet. This release gives us some insight into just how together these players were as a unit and an interesting idea of where Miles’ could have gone with his music in the early 1970′s had he kept this group together.
The collection captures the quintet in three separate concert settings: two sets at the Antibes Jazz Festival, one in Stockholm as part of “The Newport Jazz Festival In Europe” and a DVD of a performance at the Berlin Philharmonic (check out the video below to see the group performing Miles Runs The Voodoo Down in Rome from the same European tour to get an idea of the awesomeness that this release has going for it).
