Monday Music: Johnny “Hammond” Smith – “Star Borne”

LISTEN:  Johnny “Hammond” Smith – Star Borne

From “Gambler’s Life” : 1974 : Salvation Records (Out of Print)

Even though Johnny Smith was so talented he was nicknamed after his instrument the Hammond B-3, on “Gambler’s Life” (one of a handful of funky soul-jazz recordings he cut in the 1970′s) he mostly plays the Fender Rhodes.  No matter, cause the music is still as funky as ever, especially the great Star Borne in which Smith’s Rhodes is joined by soaring melodies and the ARP synthesizer courtesy of jazz-funk pioneers the Mizell Brothers.
